Polygon Reduction Plugin for Unity

3/22/2012

I can't wait to see this being released. I have yet to see a working, affordable (Simplygon might be too expensive for research projects) polygon reduction tool within Unity. It looks exciting. This would help me with my existing Google SketchUp workflow and make the purchase of off-the-shelf 3D models (e.g. from Turbosquid) much easier.

Reuters Newsstory covering Work by the ICT Game-Based Rehab Lab

3/13/2012

Reuters.com, an international news agency, just released a story about our very own Game-Based Rehab Lab. They filmed us while we were working with patients at Precision Rehabilitation in Long Beach, CA. In a second shoot we were filmed during a brainstorming session at ICT, during which we discussed the feedback of the previous work at Precision Rehab. It was a fun experience and hopefully people around the world will see what amazing work is being done. David, one of the patients in the video, was actually using his impaired left arm for the first time after his injury. This was a great achievement and the whole team was excited.
We are now in the process of setting up trials at Precision to evaluate our game-based rehab applications.

Meanwhile, the story has been picked up by large sites like aol.com, nasdaq.com, usatoday.com, chicagotribune.com and many others.

Virtual Office Project

1/10/2012

Happy New Year!

Today the Kessler Foundation posted a press release about a project that our MedVR group at ICT is working involved in. Skip Rizzo and I went to New Jersey to visit the Kessler Rehab Institute. While Skip was invited for the Estabrook Lecture Series, I installed a prototype of the Virtual Office which our group has been working on for the past months. The application is aiming to assess and train executive functions in a realistic virtual office environment.

Here is the press release:http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2012-01/kf-kfa011012.phphttp://www.youtube.com/user/KesslerFoundation#p/u/0/wCPmeFdMafU

Update on Weebly and Unity

7/16/2011

It seems that Weebly made some changes to their custom html objects. Last time I've checked, Unity content didn't display when using Weebly's custom html objects.
I made a short video explaining how this can be achieved now. It's easier than ever and you can freely embed your Unity content in your Weebly webpage.
Embedded video and download for HD version are available. Let me know if you have any questions.

Research Update, June

6/23/2011

The last 2 months have been quite busy as I have started working at USC's Institute for Creative Technologies and also worked towards finishing my thesis. I'll post some updates on current projects over the next weeks. I try to keep up with responding to emails and questions, but it might take a few days on occasion. If any questions about using Unity and Weebly arise, feel free to email me anytime. I'm still planning to update my video tutorial for Unity3, but it's not top of the priority list right now.
Besides, this blog post by the Unity folks has spread excitement amongst the whole Unity community. Those upcoming features sound absolutely amazing.

I'm off to RehabWeekZurich now, presenting a paper about the rapid development of virtual environments (see publications). Looking forward to seeing familiar faces there (and new people of course).

Visual Programming in Unity

I have just added the three major Unity visual productivity tools to the Unity resource list. It's great to see 3rd party developers to pick up on the idea of visual programming. Coming from Quest3D myself, I am looking forward to trying the following Unity extensions:

Antares Universe - Vizio (forum thread)
cost (as of 05/22/11) Euro 142.50
Visual programming tool similar to the approaches of Quest3D and Virtools.
Asset store link

Playmaker by Hutong Games
cost (as of 05/22/11) Euro 95.00
Visual State Machine Editor (website and forum thread)

Asset store link

uScript by Detox Studios (Beta Version)
website and forum thread
Visual Scripting Tool similar to UDK's Kismet

The first 2 are available at the Unity Asset Store. uScript is still in beta stage.

Update:
Brain Builder is a new tool in the visual-scripting niche.
webs

If anyone has any experience with them or even has used all of them, please feel free to get back to me. I'd be interested in comparing these tools.

Conferences and Thesis

4/2/2011

It's been pretty quiet around here lately. I've been wrapping up my work at the rehabilitation clinic in Schaufling and I'm now writing my thesis. This is sort of a full-time job by itself which leaves me with little time for other projects. However, I have had another paper accepted for ICVR2011 @ RehabWeekZurich. I'm looking forward to coming back to Europe in late June. In the meantime I'll be attending and presenting at Laval Virtual next week.
Starting on April 20th, I'm off to Los Angeles to work at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. Yay!! Inspiring and busy times ahead (besides writing up a thesis...).

Hope to see you around at the conferences.

Christmas Update

12/25/2010

Hey folks,

Merry Christmas everyone. I've been hard at work to finish my studies at the Asklepios Rehabilitation Clinic, Schaufling Germany. I have finished testing a prototype of a Virtual Memory Task. It's been a huge success and I'm in the process of submitting a paper for Laval Virtual 2011 (http://www.laval-virtual.org/#Home). I'm looking forward to some feedback and am already planning my next studies. I have tested the application with >40 neurological patients and I'm going to start some single-case studies soon. I intend to use the application as a training tool to accompany patients during their 4-6 week rehabilitation program. Stay tuned and check out the task video here (second prototype).

I also started gathering some EEG data using my Emotiv EPOC brain computer interface. I have some raw EEG data recordings for participants doing visual and verbal memory tasks and also using my Virtual Memory Task. Analyses are on the way! Below you can see the EPOC in action.
